What they do
Measures wheel speed and direction of rotation. A magnetic
pulse/Hall type sender that signals the ECU with a frequency
signal which increases with wheel speed. This information
is most commonly used by the anti-lock brake system
An anti-lock braking system senses when a wheel has reached
locking point, and automatically releases brake pressure regardless
of how hard the driver is pushing the brake pedal and then
reapplies the pressure as soon as the wheel starts to rotate
again. The primary purpose of ABS is to assist the driver
to retain control of steering during evasive braking and steering.
Other uses for wheel speed information include traction control
(virtual limited slip differentials) and dynamic stability
control where a braking force is applied to one or more wheels
to stabilize the vehicle under extreme cornering conditions.
Range
150 part numbers and 450 vehicle applications, which offer
a reasonable initial range coverage of approximately 60% of
the UK vehicle parc.
Symptoms of failure
ABS/DSC warning light illuminated on dash board. Brakes locking
under severe conditions.
Maintenance
Inspect for damage or corrosion at sensor and sensor terminals
at time of routine service and brake maintenance. Check sensor
for build up of dirt or debris which may affect performance
