Symptoms of failure
Usual front pipe failures are associated
with corrosion or flexi-pipe failure, this results in a major
exhaust leak. In severe cases the catalytic converter can
become detached from the engine resulting in it contacting
the road. Exhaust noise and exhaust fumes getting into the
driver compartment are also frequent complaints.
Maintenance
The front pipes themselves are not serviceable;
failure usually results in complete replacement. Fuel Parts
UK are able to offer replacement flexi-pipes, should the failure
be limited to this it may be possible to fabricate a repair.
Caution, engine mount failure will cause front pipe or flexi-pipe
failure, ensure that these are checked before fitting a replacement.
Another note of caution concerns the Lambda sensor which
is often fitted into the front pipe. These often seize and
removal of the sensor can damage the threads of the sensor.
Typical location
As its name suggests it is fitted at the front of the exhaust
system between the engine and the catalytic converter.
